What do you enjoy about working at heights?
So many things! 🙂 The variety, the freedom, the movement, the friends, the height itself and the views...
How did you start with work at heights?
I'd been climbing on rocks since I was a kid, and my dad used to do rope access work too, so getting into it through friends came quite naturally. I think it started with some painting jobs and pigeon deterrent installations in Prague, sometime towards the end of secondary school.
But I actually remember the very first time I was up on a roof as a child. My dad was working on the roof of the nursery school I attended, and he took me up with him. The other kids saw me up there. It was incredibly cool!! 😎
What is your favourite workplace (or favourite type of work)?
I don't really have a favourite place, but if I get to choose, it's definitely somewhere away from people and cities. Less risk of dropping something on someone. As for the work itself, the more varied it is, the better.
Other interests?
Right now, my main interests are our little one and a house that's currently being renovated. Before that, when free time still existed, my wife and I used to do a bit of climbing. 😉 I'm already looking forward to when things calm down a bit and we can start travelling with the little one as well.
The most impressive working experience?
I don't have one specific experience in mind, but working for the first time with the Northern Lights above my head was quite something. Flying by helicopter to a remote wilderness site was also quite an experience. Working above an empty Old Town Square in Prague during COVID was pretty interesting too.
Plans for the future?
Wind turbines have always appealed to me, and now that Singing Rock also offers GWO training, the idea is still somewhere in the back of my mind. But with a baby at home, I'd probably prefer to stay closer to home and focus more on tree work.
Work at heights in 100 years?
Hard to say. I don't want to be too negative about what the whole planet will look like in 100 years. But considering that I also enjoy flying drones, I expect that some jobs will eventually be done from the ground with nothing more than a remote controller in hand.
