What do you like about climbing?
A life attitude, problem‑solving, and the pure joy of movement! When climbing, I feel free.
How did you get started climbing?
My dad sometimes took me to the climbing gym back in elementary school, and when I was 11–12, I started attending a grammar school that had a climbing club. That’s where I began going regularly. I slowly carved my own path to the rocks afterward.
Other interests?
I study painting at UMPRUM in Prague, art and culture are kind of my parallel life. I also have a wife and a little son, so there’s no shortage of entertainment.
Favourite climbing area?
Adršpach–Teplice Rocks.
The best achievements?
Climbing the multi‑pitch route Histoire Sans Fin in Switzerland last summer.
Biggest climbing experience?
Climbing the headwall of Trango Tower in Pakistan, where I had to smoothly switch between free climbing, snow‑ice sections, and aid climbing. All of it in extreme conditions and altitude. Altogether, we spent 13 days on the wall, which was an experience in itself.
Future plans?
More expeditions to Pakistan, Patagonia, Yosemite, and the Alps, interspersed with beloved sandstone climbing, as well as bouldering and winter climbing.
Climbing in 100 years?
In a hundred years, the mountains on our planet will certainly look different, and climbing in them will too. It’s a bit frightening to watch up close how quickly glaciers are melting due to global warming, but people are inventive and extremely adaptable, so I’m not afraid that climbing in the mountains will disappear — maybe even new possibilities will open up that are hidden today. Icefalls and snowfields where our idols once climbed may no longer exist, just like a key hold in a legendary sport route can break… climbing is ephemeral, and the main thing is to ENJOY it.
